Is Today’s Guitar Tone Tech Getting In The Way of Our Playing?

Rob Chapman is a controversial character within the guitar community, but in his recent video “Digital Guitar Gear Has Peaked – Now Everything Changes”, he talks about guitar amp modelling technology. He specifically talks about how guitar modelling is at it’s peak, in his view, and how today for just a little investment, guitarists on a small budget can get access to killer guitar sounds. This is all very true, today is an amazing time for guitarists to sound better than ever!

But this video got me thinking…

How significant is the incremental development of guitar technology today? Is it really that helpful to have so many options at our disposal when it comes to amp modelling, or do the choices get in the way of creativity? Does the need for a more current sound cause us to spend money on new technology, which for the most part leaves us feeling underwhelmed, because our old technology was already good enough? Where is the development of guitar gear going to head next…?
